Is my Poppy’s Pet Bed machine washable? What about handwashing? Can it be drycleaned? All components of your Poppy’s Pet Bed are machine washable.
All components of your Poppy’s Pet Bed are machine washable. Some customers prefer a hand wash, which is perfectly fine. However, do not dry clean your Poppy’s Pet Bed. See our story from Shoalhaven Dry Cleaners.
Together with the cushiony, quilted Pet Bed, your Poppy’s complete bed pack comes with two velour-feel quilted outer covers and two protective inner terry-cotton covers.
This means you always have a spare set for when the other is in the wash.
Both inner and outer cover can be washed together; however, we recommend you wash them individually and separately from the household’s clothes.
When it is time for your Pet Bed to go in the wash, we suggest machine washing on a gentle cycle. Cold wash is fine as long as you use washing products designed for a cold wash. We recommend tumble dry only. If you line dry or flat dry, the fibre filling will not rejuvenate.
The Pet Bed fibres need the hot air and tumbling to plump them up again, plus the heat helps prevent mildew and mould.
The fibre-fill Pet Bed casing is made of high-density pure cotton Japara fabric. This much sought-after tight-weave cotton is a premium fabric for quilts and pillows, with a thread count of about 230 threads per square inch.
The protective cover is impervious to drool – a breathable, water-repellent and stain-resistant fabric, creating an excellent barrier between any accident – and responds to a quick wipe-over.
When it comes to wash day on the short pile, quilted cover, we recommend machine wash on a gentle cycle, cold or warm machine wash. This quilted cover should be washed and dried inside out.
Remove dirt or oil and do a pre-wash soak to help loosen stains. A little baking soda or vinegar is a clever idea for smells and tricky stains. If your pet or household have allergies, consider unscented hypoallergenic laundry detergent.
Remove fur with either a pet glove or a vacuum cleaner, which will help reduce build-up in the washing machine.
Your Poppy’s Pet Bed was designed to be long-lasting and that means we have factored in lots of washing over the years. Every dog likes a nice, clean, fresh-smelling bed as much as you do.
While you might not wash your dog bed as often as your human bedding, this depends largely on you, your dog and your home. Is your pet an inny or an outy? Inside all day or out and about rolling in the mud? Long hair? Short hair? Or a shedder? That will make a difference. Some pups dribble and drool, most dogs will endure a bout of illness and age does tend to weary your furry friend, which may result in mishaps or accidents and increase the need to wash your pet and the bed. And if your furry baby is immobile or ill, a fresh clean bed is key to recovery.
Don’t start a fire in the dryer
There are no buttons, eyelets or metal studs and our no-rust, nylon zipper can go in the dryer – unlike metal snaps or studs that can damage a dryer or even start a fire.
There are no polystyrene beads, foam or foam moulding that would be impractical as well as potentially dangerous in a washing machine.
Home hygiene and health for hounds
The velour-feel fabric of Poppy’s dog bed does not retain that tell-tale doggy smell and the short nap resists insect and bug penetration.
For your dog’s comfort, consider washing the Pet Bed frequently as your dog’s bed can easily and quickly accumulate bacteria. Wash more often during tick and flea season and more so if your pup is unwell.
Faux fur or shaggy dog beds can encourage and breed pathogens, which is why we created Poppy’s beds with a velour-feel fabric to repel the mites, ticks and crawlies that live, breed and burrow deep into long or fluffy fabrics.
Dogs can spread germs, viruses and bacteria, all of which need a host to thrive and survive, in turn causing risk to the family; in particular, the immunocompromised, young or elderly.
Washing your dog’s bed frequently will be well worth it for the health and hygiene of your home, your family and your dog.
Our hot tip: When the bed is freshly washed, consider washing your pooch at the same time too.
